Rainbow trout for my aquaponics!

I just dropped in at the Woodvale Fish Farm to get some rainbow trout for my backyard aquaponics set-up. These will grow fast over the cool months, with a harvest time of September/October.

While there, I also got some small silver perch. These will take 2-3 years to grow to plate-size without rushing them.

Before introducing them to my tanks, I gave them a good vet-check, and they all have a clean bill of health!

I’ll enjoy feeding them, and watching them grow. Here’s me playing fish farmer.

Tumour removal from, not a goldfish, but a fish as tiny as a tetra!

I’ve done many tumour removals from koi, goldfish, oscars and others, but never on a fish as small as a neon tetra!

Watch these veterinarians doing, pretty much, microsurgery, to remove lumps from the cute little neons.

New technology to prevent massive stock losses on fish farms being developed in Townsville.

Our team member make us so proud.

“We know that disease is the biggest problem on farms [causing] the majority of the economic loss,” Ms Gomes said.

“40% loss of production on farms can be caused because of disease.”

A hand-held device being developed at James Cook University (JCU) in Townsville could help reduce massive stock losses at fish farms.

Barramundi harvest, long overdue.

If you’ve still got barramundi in your unheated aquaponics, it’s very much time to harvest them (at least in the southern parts of Australia).

Barra are tropical species (native to Australia’s north) and can tolerate water temperatures down to 16 degrees Celsius, but not for prolonged periods.

Pictured are fish from my backyard aquaponics set-up, harvested about a month ago.

And along came a koi doctor.

Meet one of my colleagues from across the other side of the globe.

Amazing ponds and surgery skills.

Dr Greta Van de Sompel is a veterinarian specialising in fish. At this link, she shows how to perform an operation to remove a tumour from a koi.

Does anyone know what the direct and indirect economic losses from outbreaks of infectious diseases in commercial aquaculture?

Here’s a paper produced by Fish Vet Group that details nearly 500 events of parasitic interaction with aquaculture species costing aquaculture businesses "an annual loss of 5·8–16·5% of the value of UK aquaculture production (across all species in both freshwater and marine systems)… these estimates are only for UK losses and do not include losses due to bacterial and viral pathogens, they can still be considered low when compared with anecdotal reports suggesting that typical disease losses for certain aquaculture industries in Asia range from 30 to 50%."
