The Aquatic Veterinarian bulletin by the WAVMA

Check-out the real-life problems and discussions had by aquatic veterinarians, and all the news as it happened at http://www.wavma.org/News-ViewsAVN-Archive

It has fantastic information useful for other veterinarians and veterinary students, and informs the public about what aquatic veterinarians do.

Here you’ll see WAVMA is doing so much to promote and develop the discipline of aquatic veterinary medicine.

Proposed additions to the Noxious Fish List – WA.

Below is a message from Ms Claire Taylor (Translocation Officer for Department of Fisheries),claire.taylor@fish.wa.gov.au :

"As part of a national strategy to prevent non-native, ornamental fish getting into Australia’s waters and damaging our aquatic habitats and native species, the Department of Fisheries is considering adding another group of fish species to Western Australia’s Noxious (banned) Fish List.

Most of the species proposed are not expected to be kept or traded in WA, as they have little or no commercial, industry or hobby value. However, we want to make sure fish owners have been properly consulted before progressing with any noxious fish list additions.

Please see the following link for a list of the proposed species:http://www.fish.wa.gov.au/Sustainability-and-Environment/Aquatic-Biosecurity/Translocations-Moving-Live-Fish/Pages/Noxious-Banned-Fish.aspx

The consultation period ends 15 February 2016. Please email any comments or
queries to: biosecurity@fish.wa.gov.au”

Under the Fish Resources Management Act 1994 you must not do the following with any noxious fish:

-Keep, breed, hatch or culture them;
-Have them in your possession;
consign or convey them;
-Release them into any waters; or
-Put them into a container or receptacle in which they might remain alive.

Penalties of $10,000 and above apply for possessing or releasing noxious fish.

What are Christmas tree worms?

They are marine burrowing, segmented worms (or polychaetes in short).

Aquatic Animal Health Chapter of the Australian and New Zealand College of Veterinary Scientists (ANZCVS) – excerpt from the December 2015 College Courier.

Message from the Aquatic Animal Health Chapter President

2015 was a busy year for our small chapter with our first successful candidate for Fellowship. Dr Roger Chong is congratulated on his efforts and has set a standard to which others can aspire.

The Chapter will be hosting two days of activities at the 2016 College Science Week [7-8 July 2016] and we are putting the final touches to plans for an international guest speaker. We are also seeking to investigate a joint session with other chapters. The program will be looking to enlighten practitioners who may be undertaking small amounts of aquatic animal health work in their day to day, on some of the emerging and interesting aspects of aquatic animal practice. If you are a practitioner looking for a sea change there is a very wide scope to apply your investigative and problem solving skills to helping pet, production and wild populations of aquatic animals.

If we are to continue eating fish then we will be farming the majority consumed. With intensive farming comes health management of stock under production and so there has been and will remain an increasing demand for veterinarians to lead aquatic animal health management.

Finally I would encourage members in all other chapters to become members of the AAH Chapter, particularly those of you who are undertaking laboratory diagnostics. You will be interested in how much overlap there is, with what you may see as disparate pursuits.

Look forward to seeing you at College week.
