Professor Victoria Braithwaite, Fisheries and Biology at Penn State University
Co-presented with the Human Animal Research Network and the Sydney Environment Institute
Fish, with their lack of facial expressions or recognisable communication, are often overlooked when it comes to welfare. Annually, millions of fish are caught on barbed hooks, or left to die by suffocation on the decks of fishing boats – should we be concerned about this?
Victoria Braithwaite explores the question of fish pain and suffering, and explains what we now understand about fish neurobiology and behavior that helps us appreciate how fish perceive and experience their world…

Q: What is another word for eight abscesses?
A: Octo-pus!
Sorry for being so gross. It’s the pathologist in me coming out. Quite a good variation to, “What you call eight cats” if I say so myself 😛

I’ve spent the last 15 YEARS working not just with fish, but histopathology as well.
Now these researchers are saying that pigeons can learn similar skills in 15 DAYS!!!
The authors conclude that pigeons are “effective, tractable, informative, statistically interpretable and cost effective medical image observers.”
It is alarming that this sort of work is published. Would you want your tumour diagnosed by a qualified (veterinary) pathologist, or by a bird?
