In my final year of university I was given a copy of this book (pictured left) by a close friend. I read it from cover to cover with great delight! It contains 265 different cases from 23 world renowned fish veterinarians. I thought it was just the most amazing book ever.
And, you can imagine it was such a great surprise and honour to be asked to contribute to the second edition (pictured right). The second book contains all new cases – 221 in fact. Contributors have increased to 34, includes some of the original from the first edition. This goes to show that the numbers of experienced aquatic veterinarians are on the rise. This is great news for all fish keepers globally.
After reading these books, you can appreciate the breadth and depth of knowledge required of an aquatic veterinarian. This is on top of the years of study to become a qualified veterinarian.

This is one of the commonly asked questions.
Fish are animals; and diagnosing diseases in animals, and treatment of animals are acts of veterinary science. So unless you are a registered veterinarian, you are not legally allowed to diagnose and treat animals of others.
To explain using humans as examples, we are able to self-treat to a certain extent, however, we are not allowed to treat others without being suitably qualified.
In Western Australia, the fine for the first conviction is $10,000. Subsequent fines are $20,000.

Two great white sharks swimming in the ocean spied survivors of a sunken ship.
“Follow me son” the father shark said to the son shark and they swam to the mass of people.
“First we swim around them a few times with just the tip of our fins showing.”
And they did.
“Well done, son! Now we swim around them a few times with all of our fins showing.”And they did.
“Now we eat everybody.”And they did.
When they were both gorged, the son asked, “Dad, why didn’t we just eat them all at first? Why did we swim around and around them?”
His wise father replied, “Because they taste better if you scare the shit out of them first!”
