There are very few medicines authorised for use in fish. Subsequently, as a veterinarian, we have to constantly search for ways to treat fish diseases and use veterinary drugs off-label. Wouldn’t it be good if there was a go-to fish drug book you could refer to quickly?

Fish Vetting Medicines (2012) – Formulary Of Fish Treatments

There are nearly 300 entries in this publication. It provides a wealth of information on medications that may be available for use by fish health professionals in the treatment of fish diseases.

The purpose of this formulary is to collate the knowledge that aquarists, aquaculturalists, public aquaria, local fish shops and veterinarians already have, and to filter out misinformation and then provide this information in a quick, easy to access form.

This book is recommended to be used as a companion to “Fish Vetting Essentials” (2011) by Drs Richmond Loh & Matt Landos.

Some three years ago, I published on my blog, an article I came across, to see what others had to say. Recently, I was approached by a reader from (would you believe it) Richmond (not me!) has prompted me to review this blogged article… and rightly so.

Well, if you’re ever unsure about material circulating around the internet, Snopes.com do some good fact-checking. The mentioned article appears to be all patched together, from unrelated content, to produce this hoax:

Our reader had also gone to the trouble of finding the original sources of some of the pictures that have been used inappropriately in the article:

• The alleged color map of radiation spread, is actually a map showing the tsunami waves spread across the Pacific Ocean (radiation itself travels in straight lines).
• Fish with white tumour: the genuine 2010 original source of this photo – https://www.thestar.com/news/canada/2010/09/17/deformed_fish_found_in_lake_downstream_from_oilsands.html

It also appears that Turner Radio Network is illegitimate, and the Google link to it, brings you to a worrisome site. And Wikipedia even has a page dedicated to "Hal Turner" (yikes!)

I receiveda good question related to my last post (https://thefishvet.com/2017/07/19/biosecure-australia-intends-to-let-loose-a-devastating-fish-virus-join-the-discussion/).

Question:Richmond, from your perspective, do you think that the release of KHV can be prevented at this point? I agree with your concerns and I share many of the concerns raised in the previous WAVMA webinar on the topic; particularly those surrounding the environmental impacts of large scale, rapid death and decay of fish in the waterways. And the fact that there is "no going back" once it happens. However, I get the impression that the government is set in its plan to release the virus, no matter what research findings reveal and no matter what opposition they meet. Am I being too defeatist? Do you think it’s possible to change their plans?

My response:
As part of the stakeholder consultation process, an official Facebook Page was setup (link – https://www.facebook.com/auscarpplan/). If you try clicking on it…

You get this message:
The page you requested cannot be displayed at the moment. It may be temporarily unavailable, the link you clicked on may be broken or expired, or you may not have permission to view this page.

Makes me wonder why it has been taken off-line. Perhaps it exposed the great degree of opposition they were faced with, and weren’t prepared with answers to address many concerns.

I would have thought that a consultation process would have been better to have taken place at the beginning of the program. This would allow the program to fashion research to adress aspects of concern to stakeholders (environmentalists, biologists, aquatic veterinarians, fishermen, water users, members of the community, and others).

A consultation process that is timed to occur only after investing 10 years of funding… this defeatist attitude is entirely understandable.

There are many safe alternatives to KHV. And if KHV is released now, it will nullify any effect, alternative measures could have.

Now it appears that one of the stakeholders have reopened discussions, on another Facebook Page –

The parts that jumped out at me:

• The sheer scale of mass fish kills we’d witness if KHV is released.

• Then the unimaginable consequential environmental destruction.

• Another thing to note is that China is the single largest nation of carp consumers. And Australian food exports and farming are heavily reliant on China as a trade partner. How will the presence of KHV affect trade? And, how will China see Australia, if the KHV we release, inadvertently finds its way to cause destruction of China’s carp farms?

So, about November last year, they put out some barramundi for people to go fishing and called it a great success… (see previous post –

Now the ponds are no longer warmed by the power station, and there has been mass deaths of thousands of barramundi.

“Remarkably, a spokesman for Victoria Fisheries still described the manipulation of mother nature a success.”

I wonder how the mass fish kill has affected water quality and the local environment; and whether fishermen have been recruited to help with the clean-up process.

I can predict these animals will develop skin sores and fungal infections, and all die out before long.
