Sex act on dolphin: Shocking video from Dolphinarium in Netherlands.

This is obviously an attention-grabbing headline.

Have a read of this article (link) and see what you think.

This act is not all that unusual in a variety of species. Some veterinarians involved in breeding animals do it for dogs, horses, cattle… I’m sure for many more other species. In my case, my clients and I strip koi for example.

I remember when I was an undergraduate, I had to hold a huge flask-like contraption at for a horse. It was scary – not just the big heavy stallion and mare that could crush me, but also the tree-trunk sized, snake-like appendage that I had to redirect into the flask! Glad I the only horses I deal with now, are seahorses.

Yours sincerely,

Dr Richmond Loh

Important health check-up for pond fishes occurs in autumn.

Autumn is a good time of the year to book for a health check-up for pond fish, because their immune system function will start to be in decline. Right now, the water temperature is still warm enough that we can help fish recover from any diseases they may be harbouring at this time. A timely diagnosis is what you need. Fish need to be examined all over, and microscopically, and waters tested.

I’m happy to let you know that we now have TheFishVet team of representatives based in Perth, Melbourne and Townsville. Meet TheFishVet team at –http://thefishvet.com.au/about_us.html

Please give me a call, or send me an email to arrange a site visit.

Koi herpesvirus (KHV) as a Control Agent for Carp in Australia – register for the FREE webinar.

There’ve been talks about the release of KHV in Australia in a plight to save some of Australia’s most beautiful river systems. Is it really going to happen?

How will this affect you, and your beloved koi? Come and listen in, to be full-bottle on the subject. This way you can have all your questions answered and be better prepared to take special precautions to keep your pets safe from the killer virus.

My feeling is the release WILL HAPPEN, with a date set around September 2017.

The WAVMA have been able to organise for the lead veterinary scientist (who is doing research on this agent) to present a webinar.

Join in on Thursday, 14th April 2016 at 2:00 PM AWST (4pm AEST) for this free webinar.

About this webinar: This presentation will provide some background information on the epidemiology of the disease caused by cyprinid herpesvirus 3 (CyHV-3), and will then consider the major questions that arise whenever the use of CyHV-3 is promoted as a biocontrol agent, including:

why is it necessary to control carp in Australia?
will it be effective?
is it safe to use? and,
what is the origin of the virus?

Learning Objectives – participants will understand:

1. Important common and emerging viral and bacterial diseases in tilapia;

2. How these disease affect tilapia and tilapia production; and,

3. Approaches to diagnosing, treating and/or preventing infections

About the speaker: Dr McColl is a veterinarian with training in virology, immunology, pathology and molecular biology. After completing a pathology residency and PhD at Cornell University, he joined CSIRO-Australian Animal Health Laboratory (AAHL) in 1990, and the Fish Group (at AAHL) in 2000, and is involved with KHV research that has been funded by the Invasive Animals of CRC, since 2007.

This webinar is suitable for veterinarians, vet techs/nurses, vet students and veterinary practice staff.

Interested but can’t join the live webinar? If you register for the live webinar and are unable to attend, you will be e-mailed a link to view the webinar at a later time. Register now! Click on.

Feel free to forward this announcement to colleagues.

The basics of aquatic medicine: What Vets need to know about fish?

This FREE llive webinar is hosted by WAVMA and IVSA Standing Committee on Veterinary Education (SCoVE)
on Friday 18th March at 6.00pm GMT (see http://tinyurl.com/gp4ymnz for local time).

The registration page can be found at http://tinyurl.com/htqt2oe.

World leading aquatic veterinarian, Dr Chris Walster, will be talking about "What Vets need to know about fish?" The talk aims to draw similarties with traditional veterinary medicine as we know it, by integrating companion animal knowledge into Aquatic Veterinary Medicine. The webinar includes some of the basics but the main topics are:
available aquatic veterinary medicine options,
the need for vets and
how students can use the knowledge they have gained in companion animal medicine within aquatic medicine and the similarities between the two.
Whilst aimed at students it will be of some interest to other veterinarians starting out in aquatic veterinary medicine.
