Lethal testing for viruses in ornamental fish postponed after complaints by pet industry – ABC News (Australian Broadcasting Corporation)
Are these the results of the petition created by Mr Rout at Boronia Aquarium and by people-power?
A pity that the leading picture is of a wrong type of angelfish.

“Miracle” Gel Powder used by TheFishVet in treating skin ulcers in fish.
There has been a recent flurry of interest in the product I use to treat fish skin ulcers. The problem with just applying betadine onto fish ulcers is that they wash off immediately when fish are replaced in the water.
TheFishVet’s Powder Gel is a unique way to ensure sustained application of antiseptics or antibiotics on fish wounds. Puffer bottles are available though TheFishVet’s Online Shop. It contains 10g of powder and retails at AU$56.95. There is no expiry date (I had one bottle that was just as good, after more than 7 years, and so it’s good to have on hand for emergencies).
You can treat many fish with ulcers provided you use it sparingly as shown in the video <>. Applying it too thick will result in the bandage floating off upon returning fish to the water.
Much of the cost is the bottle and packaging of the powder. If you are interested in placing a bulk order, we can provide you with a special price.

Thousands of fish found dead in Collie River.
Finding multiple fish species and including marron, it suggests an environmental/toxic cause is likely (instead of infectious). Let’s see what authorities find as the cause.

Busting shark myths.
From the CSIRO mailing list…
“In the past few weeks the media has been in a frenzy over ‘lurking and menacing’ sharks along the New South Wales coastline. Crowded Sydney waters were evacuated, a teenager was bitten in Mollymook and Newcastle beaches were closed for over a week. So what’s the deal here? Are we seeing the real-life return of Jaws?
Our resident white shark expert, Barry Bruce, knows a thing or two about these ancient predators. He is one of Australia’s pre-eminent authorities on the species and is the head of our White Shark Research Program.
According to Barry, the story behind the current shark saga is far less salacious.
Read the shark truths and myths on our blog.”

Newest Fish Bacteriology Book – Doctor Nicky Buller (2014) Bacteria and Fungi from Fish and other Aquatic Animals: A Practical Identification Guide
Here is the blurb on the back cover:
“Fish and other aquatic animals are prone to bacterial infections in the same way as terrestrial animals. Disease may occur systemically or be confined to external surfaces; either way, it can cause suffering for the animals and economic difficulties for the fishermen, fish farmers and other aquatic workers who rely on them. With recent increases in intensive fish farming systems and international trade, as well as the emergence of new diseases, it has become more important than ever that up-to-date aquaculture research into bacteria is applied and that laboratories have diagnostic capacity to identify new pathogens.
The practical book provides an updated resource for the identification of bacteria found in animals inhabiting the aquatic environment. Detailing the steps taken to isolate and identify unknown bacteria, it contains expanded biochemical identification tables, molecular identification tests and updated information on the pathogenesis and virulence of each organism. It also includes new coverage of traditional and molecular identification of fungal pathogens and quality-assurance-standards for laboratories.
Fully illustrated with colour photos detailing the microscopic and cultural appearance of over 30 species of bacteria, this manual provides a useful reference for laboratory researchers as well as students and researchers of aquaculture and microbiology.”
About the author:
Doctor Buller is senior microbiologist at Animal Health Laboratories, Department of Agriculture and Food Western Australia where she has worked for over 20 years. Prior to this she worked in medical laboratories. She has a post-graduate qualification in molecular biology, a PhD involving molecular typing techniques.
Book cover picture: The fish on the cover was named “Zoidberg” from the cartoon Futurama.
